Two Dead, Two Injured in Suspected Electrical Leak at Conrad Bengaluru Pool
Two foreign nationals died and two other people were injured after a suspected electrical leak at a hotel swimming pool in Bengaluru, India, according to local police. The incident occurred Friday evening, Oct. 30, at the Conrad Bengaluru in the city’s Halasuru neighborhood, prompting authorities to cordon off the pool area while investigators work to determine what went wrong.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said investigators suspect an electrical leak but are awaiting medical, technical, and expert reports before confirming the cause. The deaths have drawn statements from Lufthansa, IBM, and Hilton Worldwide Holdings, which owns the Conrad brand, and have renewed attention on swimming pool electrical safety in India’s technology capital.

Officials said four people were taken to Manipal Hospital after the incident. According to police, Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a 57-year-old German national and Lufthansa crew member, was deceased when he was brought in. Juraj Horvat, a 45-year-old Slovak national who worked as a project manager for IBM, died after doctors attempted to revive him.
A 41-year-old American guest identified as Mathew Desantis and Rahul Tiwari, a 28-year-old pool attendant and lifeguard, were injured while trying to help. Electrical Safety Questions for Hotel Swimming Pools
The incident has raised broader questions about electrical safety standards at hotel leisure facilities, particularly regarding underwater lighting, earthing, and pump systems. While no official link has been established between the pool’s maintenance schedule and the accident, the hotel’s website listed the pool as closed for maintenance from Oct. 31 through Nov. 30, according to NDTV.
