Shannon Leigh Godwin Extends Jeopardy! Reign with October 27 Runaway Win

Oakland interior designer Shannon Leigh Godwin remained undefeated on Jeopardy! after a runaway victory in the Tuesday, October 27 episode, turning what the broadcast presented as a low-scoring game into a commanding third win. Godwin entered her third appearance from Oakland, California, with a two-day total of $25,602 and faced Polly Bethea, a creative director from Athens, Texas, and Harshish Chitkara, a technology consultant from Superior, Colorado.

By the end of play, Godwin had added an even $15,000 to her tally, bringing her three-day total to $40,602 and securing her return for a fourth game.

Godwin Holds Steady Against Texas and Colorado Challengers

Godwin kept the lead throughout the contest as both opponents stumbled on the Daily Doubles. Bethea and Chitkara each dropped into negative territory after incorrect wagers. Bethea managed to recover and get back on the board by the end of the Double Jeopardy round, finishing that segment with $2,600. Chitkara, meanwhile, reached $0 and was unable to compete in Final Jeopardy.

Heading into the final round, Godwin stood at $12,400, well ahead of Bethea and far clear of Chitkara’s shutout.

Final Jeopardy “Notorious Names” Clue Points to Jack Ruby

The Final Jeopardy category was “Notorious Names.” The clue read: “A TV reporter noted a ‘human phalanx’ around this man as he left a courtroom after getting a death sentence on March 14, 1964.”

The correct response was Jack Ruby. Ruby was the Dallas nightclub owner who shot Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of assassinating President John F. Kennedy.

Bethea supplied the correct response and wagered $2,008, finishing with $4,608. Godwin also answered correctly, wagering $2,600 to end the game with $15,000. The result was a runaway win despite the modest scores elsewhere on the board.

“An instaget for everyone of a certain age. The only other possible response never made it to a trial since he was killed just days after the November 22, 1963 incident underlying this clue,” a Reddit user said about the Final Jeopardy clue.

Godwin’s three-day total now stands at $40,602. She will return on Wednesday for her fourth game, seeking to extend her reign as champion.
