Quentin Tarantino’s Final Film Plans Amid Stage Debut of ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’

Quentin Tarantino has long signaled that his tenth feature film will mark the end of his directing career. While he confirmed that the script for that prospective final project is complete, the filmmaker said he will not move forward with it until his newly opened stage play concludes.

Tarantino Confirms Script Completed for 10th Feature

During a recent appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Tarantino told host Graham Norton and guests Ellen DeGeneres, Colin Farrell and Gemma Chan that he has written a script he “really likes.” He emphasized, however, that his immediate focus is on the theatrical venture rather than jumping straight into film production.

“I’ve written a script that I really like, but I want to do the play and see who I am; then I’ll then go back and spend time with my family and live a little and then see what I want to do,” Tarantino said on the show.

From Screenplay to Stage: The Journey of ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’

The project now occupying Tarantino’s attention is “The Popinjay Cavalier,” a swashbuckling comedy that began life as a screenplay before the director realized it worked better as a play. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen, the production opened at London’s Phoenix Theatre in March 2025 following previews in late February.

Tarantino described the play as “thrilling” and expressed enthusiasm for giving West End audiences a memorable night out. The show was scheduled to run for three months, with a planned closing date of June 13, 2025.

What the Play’s Run Means for Tarantino’s Future

As of September 2025, the Phoenix Theatre engagement has concluded, having closed on June 13 as announced. With the theatrical run finished, Tarantino is now free to revisit his film script. He has not yet announced a start date for production, nor has he revealed any details about the tentative tenth feature’s plot or cast.

His most recent film remains “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2019), which earned Oscar wins for Brad Pitt (best supporting actor) and for Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh (best production design). Tarantino himself received nominations for best picture and best director, while Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for best actor.

Industry watchers note that the director’s stated intention to retire after his tenth film remains unchanged, though the interval between his last movie and any future project may now be longer than originally anticipated as he balances creative pursuits with family time.
