DK Metcalf and Aaron Rodgers Still Haven’t Clicked, Says Former Steelers Receiver Adam Thielen
DK Metcalf’s arrival in Pittsburgh was billed as a significant upgrade for the Steelers’ passing game, but the early returns have been difficult to reconcile with that expectation. Through the team’s first seven games, the veteran wide receiver has managed just 374 receiving yards, and the on-field connection with quarterback Aaron Rodgers has yet to develop into the consistent weapon Pittsburgh envisioned when it acquired him.
A Disappointing Start to the Rodgers-Metcalf Partnership
Last season, Metcalf posted 850 yards but was suspended for the team’s final two regular-season games, and he never established a reliable rhythm with Rodgers. The Steelers appeared to address the issue around him by adding Michael Pittman Jr., drafting rookie Germie Bernard, and leaning on Roman Wilson’s development, hoping the extra weapons would draw defensive attention away from Metcalf.
That relief has not fully materialized. Instead, Metcalf’s modest production through seven games has kept the spotlight squarely on his performance and his chemistry with Rodgers.
Adam Thielen Breaks Down the Disconnect on ESPN
Former Steelers wide receiver Adam Thielen, speaking on ESPN’s NFL Live, offered one of the more informed perspectives on why the pairing has struggled. Thielen, who appeared in five games for Pittsburgh last season and caught 11 passes for 117 yards, argued that the issue is less about talent and more about scheme fit.
“What Aaron likes is he likes to have guys just line up and play football,” Thielen said. “We’re not going to move him around. We’re not going to put him in the slot. We’re not going to motion him. We just want to line up and go win. DK is not that guy. He’s not a guy you just put out there at the X, and it’s third and five, and you go win, right? And you’re seeing that on the tape. You’re seeing that it’s he’s looking for him. He wants him, but he’s not open. And that’s okay. Some guys just aren’t that guy. You got to be able to move them around. You got to be able to put them in stacks. You got to be able to motion them. But he’s not that guy right now in this offense.”
Thielen’s assessment carries weight because he was in the building with both players last season. He noted that Rodgers prefers receivers who can line up at the X and win one-on-one without motion, stacks, or frequent movement. According to Thielen, Metcalf is not that type of receiver right now, and the offense has not adjusted enough to create the looks that suit him.
Versatility and Route Usage Are the Missing Pieces
The former receiver’s critique points to a broader schematic problem. Rodgers wants to line players up and let them play football, Thielen said, but Metcalf thrives when he is moved around, put into stacks, and used in motion. Without those adjustments, the quarterback is looking for Metcalf on third-and-five situations where he simply is not getting open.
A Mixed Statistical Picture So Far
The receiver’s season stats illustrate the inconsistency. Metcalf has dealt with drops early in the year, though he has found more stability recently by exceeding 90 receiving yards in two of his last four games. His only 100-yard performance of the season came against Cleveland, which suggests the big-play capability is still present but has not become a weekly expectation.
What It Means for the Steelers’ AFC North Push
Pittsburgh needs Metcalf and Rodgers to get in sync if the team hopes to win crucial division games and seize sole possession of first place in the AFC North. Thielen’s comments suggest the fix may not be simple, because it requires both scheme adaptation and on-field trust. Until those pieces align, the Steelers’ passing game will likely remain a work in progress.
For now, the relationship between Rodgers and Metcalf remains one of the Steelers’ most closely watched storylines. Whether the coaching staff adapts the offense to fit Metcalf’s strengths, or whether the receiver adjusts to Rodgers’ preferences, could go a long way toward determining how far Pittsburgh goes this season.
