Chiefs’ Rashee Rice Cleared for Sunday’s Broncos Rematch After Hamstring Absence
KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Chiefs’ passing attack is poised for a significant reinforcement. Second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice practiced fully throughout the week and is expected to return to the lineup for Sunday’s AFC West showdown against the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High.
Rice has been sidelined since suffering a strained right hamstring in the Week 4 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. His absence coincided with the two least productive offensive outings of the season for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.
Offensive Struggles Without Rice
In the two games Rice missed — a Week 5 win over the New Orleans Saints and last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks — the Chiefs’ offense looked conspicuously out of rhythm. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes failed to throw a touchdown pass in either contest, a rare drought for the three-time MVP.
The receiving corps behind Rice managed just six receptions for 39 yards against Seattle. The group — comprising first-round rookie Xavier Worthy, Cyrus Allen, Justin Watson, Andrew Armstrong, and Jalen Royals — struggled to generate separation or yards after catch, forcing Mahomes into tight windows and checkdowns.
“He’s such a physical receiver. He does a great job within the zone concepts at getting himself open, as well as being physical versus man [coverage]. Having him back out there will be big for us because it’ll help take some pressure off the other guys to make plays and let them go out there and be themselves. Hopefully, we can have some success.”
Rice’s Early-Season Production
Before the injury, Rice had emerged as Mahomes’ most reliable target. Through four games, he compiled 13 receptions on 16 targets for 190 yards and a touchdown, posting an 81.3% catch rate and averaging 14.6 yards per catch. His ability to work the middle of the field against zone coverage and win contested catches in man-to-man situations gave the Chiefs’ offense a dimension it has lacked in his absence.

Defensive Questions: Delane and Thomas
While the offense welcomes back its top weapon, the defense faces uncertainty at cornerback. Rookie Mansoor Delane, the team’s top draft pick, is listed as questionable after missing Thursday and Friday practices with a right shoulder injury.
Delane’s shoulder has been a recurring issue. He initially sustained a hairline fracture in his scapula during the offseason, causing him to miss mandatory minicamp in June, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He aggravated the injury three snaps into the season-opening win over these same Broncos — ironically, right after recording an interception — and subsequently missed Week 2.
“We’ll just see how he does here going forward,” head coach Andy Reid said Friday, offering no definitive timeline.
Rookie defensive end R Mason Thomas also missed Friday’s session for a personal reason, though Reid confirmed the team expects him to travel and play against Denver. “He’ll meet us there in Denver,” Reid said.
Season-Series Context
Sunday’s game marks the second meeting between the division rivals in three weeks. The Chiefs escaped Week 1 with a 27-20 victory at Arrowhead Stadium, a game in which Delane’s interception — and subsequent injury — proved pivotal.
Denver, now 3-3 under first-year head coach Sean Payton and rookie quarterback Bo Nix, has shown incremental improvement on offense. The Broncos’ defense, however, ranks among the league’s most aggressive units, leading the NFL in pressure rate and blitz frequency.
Rice’s return could be especially valuable against Denver’s man-heavy scheme. His strength at the catch point and willingness to work over the middle force safeties to account for him, theoretically opening opportunities for Travis Kelce, Hollywood Brown (when healthy), and the rookie Worthy on the perimeter.
Outlook
Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS. With Rice trending toward full participation and the Chiefs (4-1) looking to avoid their first two-game losing streak since 2021, the stage is set for a divisional test that could clarify both teams’ playoff trajectories.
For Kansas City, the equation is straightforward: a healthy Rice restores the offensive identity that has defined the Mahomes-Reid era. For Denver, containing him — and exploiting any rust — represents the clearest path to a statement upset.
