Microsoft Challenges Apple With New AI PC Push and Surface Laptop Ultra
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is doubling down on its artificial intelligence ambitions, launching a coordinated hardware and software strategy designed to challenge Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) Mac lineup. At a Windows and Surface-focused event in San Francisco, the company unveiled plans to bring powerful AI models directly onto personal devices, moving beyond the cloud dependency that has characterized much of the current AI boom.
As part of the announcement, Microsoft opened preorders for the Surface Laptop Ultra, a machine powered by Nvidia Corp.’s (NVDA) RTX Spark Arm-based chip. The premium device is priced at $2,599, with initial shipments scheduled to begin on Oct. 16. Alongside the hardware, the Redmond company detailed its plan to run significant local AI workloads natively on Windows.
Surface Laptop Ultra Hardware, Pricing, and Local AI Specs
The Surface Laptop Ultra represents Microsoft’s attempt to merge high-end computing power with localized intelligence. According to the company, the machine is capable of running AI models with more than 120 billion parameters locally. To support these intensive tasks, configurations will offer up to 128GB of unified memory.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Product | Surface Laptop Ultra |
| Chipset | Nvidia RTX Spark Arm-based chip |
| Price | $2,599 |
| Local AI Capacity | Models with 120 billion+ parameters |
| Memory | Up to 128GB unified memory |
| Availability | Preorders open; shipments start Oct. 16 |
The announcement underscores a shift in how consumers might interact with AI agents. Rather than sending every query to a distant server, the goal is to enable faster, more private computation directly on the hardware the user already owns.
Microsoft’s Hybrid Intelligence Push and On-Device Models
Beyond the hardware, Microsoft is bringing local versions of major AI models to Windows. The lineup includes DeepSeek V4 Flash, the company’s own MAI Code 1.1 Flash, and Nvidia’s upcoming Nemotron. Microsoft noted that MAI Code 1.1 Flash has been compressed substantially to run locally, while DeepSeek V4 Flash is a massive 284-billion-parameter model that Microsoft says can operate on RTX Spark systems.
The company is also preparing a native Meta Muse app for Windows. Meta recently launched its native Muse app for Mac on Sept. 17, signaling a broader industry push toward local generative tools on personal devices.
Microsoft shared details about upcoming “Hybrid Intelligence” features as well. These capabilities allow Copilot to use files stored directly on a Windows PC to take actions, alongside a new search experience that enables users to perform quick tasks from the search bar.
“There will never be a moment where we say, ‘this runs locally, this runs in the cloud.’ Hybrid intelligence will be everywhere,” said CEO Satya Nadella onstage at the company’s Windows and Surface-focused event in San Francisco.
Nvidia Seeks to Reinvent the PC With RTX Spark
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang joined Nadella onstage and framed the RTX Spark platform as a fundamental shift in personal computing. “This is the only computer on the planet that runs everything natively on the device — DirectX, OpenGL and every CUDA application,” Huang said, arguing that the new platform combines capabilities historically spread across personal computers and the cloud.
Nvidia unveiled the RTX Spark platform earlier this year as a new class of Windows processors built specifically for local AI agents. The architecture combines a Blackwell RTX GPU with a 20-core Grace CPU. Huang’s comments underline Nvidia’s ambition to extend its AI dominance from data centers into the consumer PC market.
Meanwhile, Nadella reflected on his long tenure with the operating system. “Windows has been with me for 34 years. Looks like it’s going to be with me for 34 more,” he said, signaling continuity in the company’s core product strategy despite the aggressive AI pivot.
MSFT Stock Performance and Retail Investor Sentiment
Market reaction to the announcement was measured. Microsoft shares rose 0.1% on Wednesday, marking its fourth consecutive session of gains, though the stock dipped marginally in overnight trading.
On Stocktwits, retail sentiment for both MSFT and NVDA remained ‘neutral’ on Wednesday, unchanged from the previous day. Traders remained cautious yet interested following the event. One trader noted, “$NVDA $MSFT awesome event today, still want to wait a bit on $NVDA 233 might not come but I like this buy zone.”
Year to date, MSFT stock is up 10.2% and NVDA shares are up 27.6%. Analysts continue to watch how the hybrid AI approach translates into actual consumer adoption and hardware sales for both Microsoft and its partners.
