Steelers Defensive Power Returns as Team Prepares for Game in Paris
The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to take the field against the New Orleans Saints at Stade de France in Paris, carrying with them a roster that has undergone significant shifts due to injuries and strategic rotations. A major boost for the defense comes with the activation of safety DeShon Elliott, whose long road to recovery promises to make him available for the first time this season. With multiple key players missing and the offense relying heavily on emerging talents, the Steelers face a challenging but hopeful buildup for a decisive match.
Elliott’s Long Road Back
Safety DeShon Elliott will play after being activated from the Reserve/Injured List, marking his return just in time for a matchup against the Saints. The third-year safety returned to practice on October 8th, giving the Steelers a 21-day window to either bring him back to active duty or keep him on the injured list for the remainder of the year. Following a stint on the injured reserve list that began August 30th, Elliott brings immense experience to the locker room—accumulating 429 tackles across his career, including 291 solo stops, alongside 25 passes defensed, five interceptions, six forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and four and a half sacks.
“He’s one of our leaders, number one,” said Coach Mike McCarthy. “You look at what he brings to the locker room. Just to watch him fight back from this injury. He’s definitely someone you root for.”
Defense Gains Milestone Momentum
Elliott’s return is a massive win for the defense, highlighting the resilience of the team’s core group despite the extended absence. His career statistics demonstrate a durable and impactful presence on the field, underscoring why bringing him back is considered a huge boost for the unit. Getting him back is a vital step toward establishing depth within the safeties, which can be crucial when facing deep coverage from the Saints.
Filling the Gaps: Roster Shakeups and Elevated Practice Squads
With multiple positions compromised—including defensive ends Sebastian Joseph-Day and Derrick Harmon on the Reserve/Injured List, receivers Roman Wilson and Michael Pittman Jr., and inactive receiver Ben Skowronek—the Steelers are forced into unconventional strategies. Defensive ends Joseph-Day, who logged 10 tackles in six games, and Harmon have been sidelined, requiring rookie Gabriel Rubio and Kevin Jobity Jr. to step up further for the NFL debut at the position. Additionally, rookie Germie Bernard has earned notable time on the field, establishing trust with the coaching staff and catching a touchdown against the Bucs.
To bolster their bench depth, the Steelers have also elevated Brandon Johnson and Brandon Smith from the practice squad. Johnson, who previously had stints on Broncos and Buccaneers rosters, has proven his worth, accumulating 26 receptions for 335 yards and five touchdowns over 23 games. Meanwhile, Smith, who played for the Jets, Patriots, Cowboys, and Cardinals, continues to add value off the practice squad, elevating them specifically for today’s pivotal match.
Youth and Resilience Define the Blue Line
Coach McCarthy emphasized the importance of developing young players, noting the trust built during the offseason program and training camp. Rubio has become increasingly elevated, expressing confidence in the next man-up dynamic. Smith and Johnson, though elevated for tactical reasons, represent the Steelers’ commitment to a robust organizational depth that can weather injuries and contribute meaningfully in crucial moments like a season-ending run to the Big Easy.
As the Steelers prepare for a defining contest against the Saints in Paris, the return of DeShon Elliott provides much-needed stability to a defense that has navigated significant personnel challenges. By seamlessly integrating youth from the practice squad alongside established players, Pittsburgh aims to stay competitive and avoid another prolonged absence.
