Bears vs Packers Week 5: Three Reasons Chicago Has Reason for Optimism at Lambeau

The Chicago Bears (3-1) head to Lambeau Field this Sunday for a critical NFC North showdown with the Green Bay Packers (2-2). After sweeping the Packers at Soldier Field last season, including a playoff victory, the Bears are looking to claim their first win in Green Bay under first-year head coach Ben Johnson. Despite a significant injury list—most notably the absence of starting quarterback Caleb Williams—Chicago enters this matchup with several compelling reasons to believe they can extend their winning streak against their historic rival.

Green Bay’s Ground Game Has Been Historically Poor

The Packers’ rushing attack has been one of the worst in the NFL through the first month of the season. They have yet to rush for 100 yards in any game, and only managed to surpass 70 rushing yards in Week 4 against Tampa Bay. Their Week 3 performance against Atlanta, where they gained just 17 yards on the ground, was one of the lowest single-game rushing totals in franchise history. Perhaps most alarmingly, Green Bay has not scored a single rushing touchdown this season. This inability to run the ball allows the Bears defense to key in on the pass, making the Packers one-dimensional and giving Chicago a clear path to control the tempo of the game.

Chicago’s Offense Has the Potential to Score Points

Despite some red-zone inefficiency, the Bears have shown an ability to put up points. They tied for the most red-zone trips in the league through Week 4, and have scored at least 23 points in three of their four games. The only exception was a Week 2 loss to Minnesota that was heavily impacted by severe weather conditions. Against the Packers, Chicago will face a Green Bay defense that has struggled to contain good offenses, surrendering 20+ points in two games and losing both of those contests. The Bears’ healthy receiving corps, featuring their top pass catchers, along with the dynamic rushing of D’Andre Swift (who practiced Thursday despite a turf toe concern), provides the offensive firepower to exploit Green Bay’s secondary.

Chicago’s Defense Has Been a Strength

After giving up 37 points in the season opener, the Bears’ defense has been remarkably stout, giving up just 28 points combined over the past three games. This unit has not only forced turnovers but also improved its fundamental soundness, shutting down opposing offenses. The Packers, meanwhile, have the fifth-fewest points per game in the NFL and have yet to top 23 points in any contest. Green Bay also struggles in the red zone, which should further limit their scoring opportunities. With key defenders like Cam Lewis and Kyler Gordon returning to full practice, Chicago’s defense is poised to make the plays necessary to secure the victory.

A win on Sunday would move the Bears to 4-1 and give them three consecutive victories over the Packers, a feat that would establish significant momentum under Ben Johnson’s regime. While injuries present challenges, the Bears’ resilience and the Packers’ obvious weaknesses on the ground suggest that Chicago has a strong chance to walk away from Lambeau with a crucial victory.
