True Food Kitchen Files for Chapter 11, Closes 12 Locations
True Food Kitchen, the health‑focused restaurant chain backed by Oprah Winfrey, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and shuttered 12 of its locations, leaving 34 restaurants operating across 14 states as it seeks a buyer.
Financial Squeeze and Bankruptcy Filing
The company entered bankruptcy with roughly $1.6 million in unrestricted cash, enough to cover only about two weeks of operations and bankruptcy expenses without additional financing, according to financial adviser George N. Koutsonicolis. Chief Restructuring Officer Nathan Cook cited “significant management turnover” and “unsuccessful expansion efforts” as key factors.
Management Turnaround and Expansion Challenges
Under successive leadership teams, the chain introduced new products and restaurant concepts that diverged from its core health‑forward mission. Cook noted that these attempts, combined with frequent changes in strategy, eroded profitability and weakened brand consistency.
Pandemic‑Era Experiments and Ghost Kitchens
During the pandemic, True Food Kitchen experimented with ghost kitchens and a separate delivery‑only operation. While these initiatives aimed to capture off‑premise demand, they ultimately strained staffing and service quality, and have since been discontinued.
Oprah Winfrey’s Investment and Involvement
Oprah Winfrey made a substantial equity investment in 2018 and was expected to join the board as the chain planned to double its footprint. She remains a minority investor but is not involved in daily operations, the company confirmed.
Seeking a Buyer and Securing Financing
True Food Kitchen has secured a commitment for approximately $20 million in financing from HumanCo TFK IV, pending court approval, to support operations during the bankruptcy and sale process. The company is actively seeking a long‑term partner to sustain the brand.

True Food Kitchen stated that its remaining 34 restaurants continue to serve guests as usual while the company navigates the bankruptcy process.
The chain, founded in Phoenix in 2008, built its brand around nutritious meals and thoughtfully sourced ingredients. Its closure of 12 locations reflects the financial strain caused by management turnover, pandemic‑related operational shifts, and a challenging market environment.
