Jury Seated in Yella Beezy Capital Murder Trial as Dallas Prepares for High-Profile Prosecution

DALLAS — A jury has been seated in Dallas rapper Yella Beezy’s capital murder trial, moving the high-profile case closer to opening arguments in the 2020 shooting death of rival rapper MO3 on Interstate 35. The defendant, Markies Conway, faces life in prison if prosecutors prove he orchestrated a murder-for-hire plot against Noble.

Jury selection began Monday morning, and a panel of 12 jurors was sworn in by Monday afternoon under the supervision of Judge Chika Anyiam. The proceeding is the latest development in a case that has generated substantial public interest across North Texas since the deadly highway ambush.

Charges Stem From 2020 I-35 Ambush Killing of MO3

Prosecutors allege that Conway paid Kewon White to kill Melvin Noble, known professionally as MO3, during an ambush on I-35 in Dallas in 2020. White was found guilty of capital murder in September and sentenced to life in prison. Evidence in that case included video showing Noble being shot at and chased down on the highway.

Conway has pleaded not guilty and denies hiring White to carry out the killing. The state contends that Conway arranged the murder-for-hire scheme, a capital charge that carries a mandatory life sentence upon conviction.

Jury Selection Navigates Intense Publicity and Social Media Scrutiny

Before the panel was seated, Judge Anyiam instructed a pool of 75 potential jurors to speak up if news coverage or social media exposure had created bias against either side. “Is there anyone because of the publicity that has formed an opinion? We need to know,” the judge said. A few potential jurors raised their hands.

Defense attorney Rogge Dunn told FOX 4’s Steven Dial that impartiality will be difficult to secure given the notoriety of White’s earlier trial and the case’s local profile. “You want to go in with a level playing field with a jury coming in with a blank slate,” Dunn said.

Jury expert Allison Richardson offered a more optimistic assessment, noting that juries in high-profile cases are seated regularly despite extensive media coverage. She said she initially thought the 75-person pool was small, but the court was able to select jurors without major problems and appeared to be on track to seat a fair panel.

Related Cases, Rap Lyrics Ruling, and a Third Defendant

Conway is not the only defendant facing capital murder charges in connection with Noble’s death. A third defendant, Devin Brown, is scheduled for trial once Conway’s case concludes.

Earlier this year, Judge Anyiam ruled that most rap lyrics written by Conway cannot be used against him at trial, although a handful of songs were approved for introduction. Attorneys on both sides are expected to call several of the same witnesses who testified during White’s September proceeding.

Trial Testimony Expected to Begin Tuesday With Live Coverage

FOX 4 plans to stream the trial live once testimony begins Tuesday morning. Legal observers anticipate the proceeding could last two to three weeks. If convicted, Conway faces life in prison.

The information in this report comes from Monday’s jury selection process, updates from the attorneys, and prior FOX 4 News coverage.

“Juries with high profile social media and news coverage are seated all the time. It’s very possible to do that.”
