The Mosquito Bowl Review: War, Football, and the Weight of Sacrifice
Peter Berg’s new World War II drama, The Mosquito Bowl , for Netflix, sets its tone early with a familiar Herbert Hoover quote: “Older men declare war. But it is youth that must fight and die. And it is youth who must inherit the tribulation, the sorrow, and the triumphs that are the aftermath of war.”
The line is timeless and deeply sad, and it could have served as a powerful throughline for a story about young people caught in a global conflict. Instead, it mostly reminds the audience how many war films have walked the same emotional ground before. As admirable as Berg’s film often is in its craft, its storytelling falls short of making that familiar tragedy feel fresh.
